I just received my Asus USB-BT211 Bluetooth dongle in the mail today and was excited to finally get to use my trusty Apple Wireless keyboard again. I ordered it from Amazon after I read this tonymacx86 blogpost about recommended hardware for SandyBridge Hackintosh builds. Supposedly it should have worked right out of the box, just plug-and-play. However the dongle (BT21) that the link pointed to wasn’t for sale anymore so carelessly I found a dongle with a similar name (BT211). Long story short, the previous version (BT21) works out of the box but the newest one that I got (BT211) does not. The remainder of this post are instructions that I found after some digging on how to make it work (with some limits).
Credit goes to drcrack at the tonymacx86 forum. You should probably check out his post first, he seems to be updating it quite regularly and it contains some additional information.
1) Download this file (it’s extracted Windows 7 drivers courtesy of the user ajg0r at the tonymacx86 forum)
2) Run Terminal and change dir to your Downloads directory:
cd ~/Downloads
(No, you can’t just click “install” script in Finder — it requires to be run with sudo. If you click it, it will just exit.)
3) Unpack
tar zxf ath3k-firmware-uploader-V2.tar.gz
4) Go to unpacked directory
cd ath3k-firmware-uploader-V2
5) Install (will require admin rights)
sudo ./install
6) Shutdown, do power-off, power-on, and enjoy native bluetooth right from the start
7) Once back in OSX there will be a window stating that there is a new network adapter available. Go to Network in System Preferences and click the plus on the left and select Bluetooth DUN. All done, now just pair your device/s as usual.
Now the limits? People are reporting that the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad do not work, only “… wireless keyboard[s], audio and phones.” As I just wanted to use my Wireless Apple keyboard, I got what I wanted -_-. Thanks drcrack and ajg0r for the help!

If you’re here because the Mac App Store is giving you troubles then you’ve come to the right place. In my search I found two distinct problems and solutions.
If you’re having troubles signing in (the login window doesn’t appear or you can’t type anything in the input boxes) then it might be because you’re running FruitMenu or Application Enhancer. Apple has acknowledged that problem here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3638. If you don’t want to disable FruitMenu then fcarroll suggests a workaround:
There is a relatively easy workaround for this problem. When an attempt is made to log in to the App store with Fruit Menus running, the log in window appears behind the main window instead of in front. If the main window is moved out of the way, the log in window will be visible. You can’t type into it but, using the contextual menu, the password can be pasted and the log in button can be clicked.
If you get a never ending loading screen that reads “One moment please. Connecting to the Mac App Store. Loading…” then you’ll need to delete two files and restart.
To delete the files paste the two lines below into Terminal and press enter:
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.storeagent.plist
I did stumble upon another very similar solution by Paul Bagwell but it deletes some extra folder. If deletion of the two files plus a restart didn’t help I’d definitely give that solution a try. If you find some other problems/solutions please post in the comments and I’ll update the post.

Registering a .is domain with Bluehost

After allot of thinking and procrastination I finally decided to acquire the jonrh.is domain. Setting things up wasn’t without its hurdles though. The thing is ISNIC, the .is domain registrar, doesn’t accept Bluehosts DNS services. So this post is for those few souls out there that might run into the same problem. This is by no means going to be an extensive guide but merely what I did in the situation.
What you’ll need:
- a registered .is domain
- a Bluehost account with a dedicated IP address
To grab a .is domain head over to ISNIC.is, the process is as straight forward as any online shopping. The next step is to make sure you have a dedicated IP address for your Bluehost account. By default a dedicated IP address does cost extra, when this was written it would put you back a $30/year. Note: I’ve heard that it’s possible to do this without a dedicated IP by utilizing the free services provided by zoneedit.com but I was going anyway for a dedicated IP because I wanted to implement SSL for my site so this guide will assume for a dedicated IP. So let’s get our hands dirty:
1. Log into your ISNIC profile.
2. My Page should be the default page. Select your domain from the list and select Web forwarding (ísl: Áframsending veffang).
3. Put your dedicated Bluehost IP into the IP field. Note only put the IP into the field and not http://ip. If you do the latter you domain will only be a redirect to another site, but we’ll want Bluehost to recognize our domain.
4. Log into your Bluehost account. Scroll down in the cPanel and open Domain Manager under the Domains section.
5. Click “Assign a domain to your cPanel account”. In Step 1 just input your .is domain. We took care of Step 2 in step 3 of this guide. If Step 2 gives the same error message as in the picture then you might have to try later as it might take some time for the ISNIC forward to take effect. When successful Step 2 should say the domain was successfully verified because it pointed to the IP of your Bluehost account. Pick “Parked Domain” in Step 3.
6. You’re done!
As stated previously this is only a guide on how I did it, there are probably many more ways to solve this. On the todo list is to get SSL to work with the parked domain but I’ll probably procrastinate that for another year.

Two years ago I started cycling on a regular basis and after a while it became evident to me that there must have existed better suited tires than the tractor groved ones that I had on my mountain bike. My first slim bicycle tires where Bontrager Road Warrior 26″x1.5″. What those numbers mean is that the tire measures 26 inches in diameter, which is pretty much all mountain bikes, and 1.5 inches in thickness when inflated. I did use them for about 1000km but in the end punctures were becoming too frequent, or about once every 2 weeks (to put that in perspective I commute 8km per day 5 days a week).

My second slim tires where Continental Ultra GatorSkin 26″x1.25″. As of this writing I’ve put around 500km on them and so far no punctures or visual cuts on the tires but one pinch flat. I’ve on many occasions rolled directly over broken glass on the street and never achieved a puncture, where in the same situation the Road Warrior would have. The Continental tires roll better than the Bontrager ones which I think can be attributed to its slimmer width and higher pressure containment. I’ll have to mention though it was a nightmare to put the tires on the first time. Two soar hands and 3 hours later I finally managed to pop them on. In retrospect I learned the right technique just by that trial and error. As mentioned earlier I’ve once had to change a flat tire on these but that change was allot smoother.

Conclusion
If you’re only doing urban commuting and want to try out the benefits of slim tires but unsure if it’s your thing, I definitely recommend the Bontrager Road Warrior as a entry level tires. However there is no question about it that the Ultra Gatorskin tires are better than Bontrager Road Warrior. Although more expensive I firmly believe that they’ll pay up multiple times in the long run when it comes to mileage. On top of that, if the tires will maintain it’s excellent puncture resistance, allot of time and pain will be saved from fixing flat tires.

Custom Functions
If a custom JavaScript function in Google docs spreadsheet is put into a cell it cannot write in other cells than its own. I find this quite odd but a workaround I used was to create a custom Menu item that just fetches the values it needed and wrote the outputs in the cell.
What I initially had in mind was something like this:

But as stated above this doesn’t work. The following error message is displayed: You do not have permission to call setValue. The reason as to why it’s not allowed is beyond me but the same question was asked on the Google support forums where a Google employee simply stated it wasn’t possible. The workarounds that he suggested were “…running your script inside the editor, or from a drawing…“.
I didn’t really find that to be neat enough so my workaround as stated before was to modify the function to retrieve the values itself and do its thing with the output cells. Google provides excellent tutorials on how to accomplish both things.

Data validation bug?
When you want to know the last index that contains data you can do it like so: sheet.getDataRange().getLastRow(). However if you have a Data validation on a column, it seems as if that defines that every cell has a value, even if the cells are all empty. This makes the above function call return the number 101 (the default number of rows). When I removed the data validation from the column it returned the right index.
Sorting
You can’t sort individual columns apart from others. You can freeze up to the first 5 rows and columns, meaning they won’t be affected by the sorting. Beyond that I guess the only solution is to spread to multiple sheets.

In the spring semester of 2008 me and 6 other students took a course on creating business models. We designed from the ground up an idea of a small non/low-profit company that would enable people to deliver important documents or messages to loved ones to help them sort things out after their death. The main components of this idea would be a website where people could confidentially manage things. The system would then be connected to a governmental system to get notified about deceased individuals to know when to deliver the information.
Today I bumped into a Slashdot article about a website providing about the same service in the UK. The funny thing is we didn’t know about it when we designed ours. Great minds think alike I guess.

- This post previously only contained the original vocals but now there is a new version out featuring Rob Swire from Pendulum. I disagree with the lyrics I found on another site so I decided to make my own. It’s a little bit fuzzy so feel free to share your interpretation.
- @DAN: Cheers, fixed it.
- Adapted mostly to T-Bags version of the lyrics. After countless rounds of listening I gave up and asked couple of my friends about the lyrics and most of them agreed on T-Bags version. However most agreed that it was “we’re gonna…” instead of “we, you gonna…” in the chorus.
